In this week’s edition of Motorist’s Malaysia Popular Attractions Parking Guide, we will be staying in Kuala Lumpur. This time, we'll be heading south from the Petronas Twin Towers to Pasar Seni, home to Mahamariamman Temple and Petaling Street Market.

This is a popular little spot that offers visitors the opportunity to take in the sights of KL’s oldest Hindu temple, before heading over to Petaling Street Market to haggle over the prices of various consumer goods. To top it all off, other major attractions such as the National Mosque of Malaysia and the National Stadium are a stone's throw away from the area.

The issue with the two aforementioned locations is that they aren’t really built to cater to large volumes of vehicular traffic and are generally located along narrow streets. Parking can be quite a hassle but fret not, that’s where this guide comes in handy!

Street Parking

There are roadside lots in the area, with the closest one situated at 114 Jalan Petaling. Its capacity is quite limited, however, and it has a maximum parking duration of only two hours. On the flip side, there is neither a time restriction nor parking fare if you decide to park outside its chargeable hours (7:30PM to 6:00PM) and on public holidays. Street parking is of course still susceptible to double parking nuisances. Moreover, free parking hours aren’t exactly a plus point when you consider the extra time spent trying to find a parking space in such a densely-populated area.

Carparks

There are several options available when it comes to parking. The carpark at 198 Jalan Tun H S Lee is located nearby, with 80 spots available. But with an outrageous rate of RM2.50 for every 30 minutes or part thereof, we do not recommend it. There are many other cheaper alternatives around, one of them being the parking lot at Jalan Sultan that charges a relatively low flat rate of RM3 per hour, and 50 lots available for cars.

If you’re only visiting the temple, you might want to park your car at Bangunan Mariamman next door. It charges only RM2 per hour, but it is only open at certain times of the day, so do take note of its operating hours! Similarly, if you plan to only visit the Central Market, you can choose to park at its designated parking lot which charges RM3 for the first hour and RM2 for every hour thereafter. Check out the other options below!
