In a bold move to enhance road safety, the government will officially reduce the speed limit in school zones to 30 km/h, announced Transport Minister Anthony Loke. The new speed limit will be gazetted and strictly enforced, targeting key areas with heavy pedestrian and student movement.

This policy is part of Malaysia's broader road safety initiative, and will be rolled out in phases starting with high-risk school zones. It follows increased concern over rising accident rates involving school children, especially during peak morning and afternoon periods.

“We want to ensure the safety of our children first. Slowing down in school areas is not just smart driving — it's a life-saving act,” Loke said during a press conference.

Will there be new traffic cameras?

Yes. The enforcement will include traffic camera Malaysia upgrades, including AI surveillance and mobile speed traps, particularly during school hours. Offenders will face stiffer fines and possible demerit points under the KEJARA system.
