JPJ in final stages of reviewing demerit points system
The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is in the final phase of reviewing Malaysia’s demerit points system for traffic offences, a move that could bring major changes to how drivers are punished for road violations.
This revision, part of the wider Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS) framework, aims to enhance road safety and reduce repeat offences through stricter enforcement. Once implemented, expect new offence categories, updated point thresholds, and improved monitoring using smart traffic cameras and digital databases.
What Is the Demerit Points System?
Under the AWAS system, demerit points are assigned to motorists for offences like speeding, beating red lights, or driving without valid insurance. Drivers who accumulate too many points risk having their license suspended or even revoked.
JPJ, working closely with the Ministry of Transport, is now closing legislative loopholes to ensure that habitual offenders can no longer slip through the cracks. The updated system will likely be more digitally connected, with enforcement backed by real-time data from cameras and enforcement systems.
