KUALA LUMPUR, 4 August 2025 – A staggering 80 percent of road accidents in Malaysia are due to driver error, while the government only receives 30 percent of its proposed road safety budget, revealed Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Minister of Works.
Despite countless awareness campaigns and stricter traffic rules, driver negligence remains the main cause of accidents, from speeding and tailgating to running red lights and driving under the influence.

Why Are Malaysian Roads Still Unsafe?
According to Nanta, over half a million road accidents were recorded in 2023, with human error being the leading factor. However, Malaysia's road infrastructure struggles to keep up with vehicle growth, traffic congestion, and evolving urban needs – mainly due to underfunding.
"Even though we apply for RM1 billion, we only get RM300 million for road safety projects. This affects repair works, traffic system upgrades, and maintenance," he said.
The Human Factor Behind Road Accidents
Some of the most common driver-related issues contributing to accidents include:
Distracted driving (phones, GPS, etc.)
Reckless lane changes
Beating traffic lights
Not maintaining safe distances
Driving under fatigue or alcohol influence

Budget Woes: Not Just a Money Problem
Lack of funding delays upgrades to blackspots (dangerous road zones), lighting, pedestrian crossings, and traffic camera installations. Without proper infrastructure, even the best drivers are at risk.

What Can Drivers Do?
