A Johor Bahru Member of Parliament has urged the Malaysian and Singaporean governments to start immediate talks to lift the ban on e-hailing rides between Johor Bahru and Singapore.

The MP said the ban, in place for several years, has caused inconvenience for commuters, tourists, and workers who depend on cross-border travel.

Many residents say the absence of legal Grab or other ride-hailing options has left them with limited and costly transport choices when crossing via the Woodlands Checkpoint.

The MP highlighted that thousands travel daily between Johor Bahru and Singapore for work and leisure. Without e-hailing services, travellers are forced to rely on buses, taxis, or private cars, often facing long queues and high fares.

He believes allowing licensed cross-border e-hailing rides could improve convenience, reduce congestion at petrol stations and traffic hotspots, and boost local tourism.

He also stressed that proper regulation, insurance coverage, and fare guidelines could be introduced to ensure safety and fairness for both countries’ drivers and passengers.

If discussions move forward, the move could benefit drivers who want to tap into the high demand for JB-SG transport and passengers looking for faster, cheaper travel.

The MP also suggested using technology to track cross-border rides and ensure compliance with both nations’ laws.

Industry experts say this could help integrate with digital services like the Motorist App, which offers tools such as a loan calculator, traffic camera updates, and petrol price tracking for cross-border drivers.

If the ban is lifted, more drivers may upgrade their vehicles to take advantage of the new business opportunities.
