Almost every Malaysian driver has let their road tax (cukai jalan) slip past its expiry date at some point , whether through forgetfulness, a busy schedule, or not realising the deadline had passed. This guide explains exactly what happens when your road tax expires, the fines you face, what it means for your car insurance, and the quickest way to renew it today.

What are the fines for driving without valid road tax?

Under Section 14 of the Road Transport Act 1987, it is a criminal offence to drive or allow a vehicle to be driven on a public road without a valid vehicle licence. In practice, JPJ officers typically issue an on-the-spot compound of between RM150 and RM300 for first-time offenders. If the matter proceeds to court, the maximum fine is RM3,000 for a first conviction and up to RM5,000 or two years' imprisonment for repeat offences.

Beyond the compound itself, a summons is recorded against your vehicle's registration number in the JPJ system. Unpaid summonses will block your road tax renewal , you must settle them first before the system allows you to proceed.

There is no grace period in Malaysian law. Your vehicle becomes unlicensed the day after the expiry date on your road tax disc.

How does JPJ detect expired road tax?

The days of only worrying about manned roadblocks are over. JPJ now operates Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras on roads across Malaysia. These cameras scan number plates in real time and cross-reference them against the JPJ licensing database. If your road tax has expired, your vehicle is flagged instantly , no physical roadblock required. Avoiding certain roads or routes no longer offers any protection.

Does expired road tax void your car insurance?

Expired road tax does not automatically cancel your insurance policy. However, it creates a serious risk when it comes to making a claim. Many standard motor insurance policies in Malaysia include a clause allowing the insurer to challenge or reduce a claim if you were in breach of any law at the time of the incident. Since driving without valid road tax is a legal offence, your insurer has grounds to use this against you.

For third-party claims, Bank Negara Malaysia's regulations provide some protection, but your insurer may seek to recover costs from you after settling,  creating financial exposure you want to avoid. The safest position is always to keep both current.

You cannot renew your road tax without a valid car insurance policy. Settle your insurance renewal first, then proceed with road tax.

How to renew your road tax — step by step via Myeg

The fastest and most convenient way to renew your road tax in Malaysia is through Myeg (myeg.com.my). The entire process takes under ten minutes and your road tax disc is posted to your address within three to five working days.

Visit myeg.com.my and log in with your MyKad number. Select 'Road Tax Renewal', enter your vehicle registration number, and the system will verify that your insurance is valid. Choose your renewal period , six or twelve months , review the payable amount, and complete payment via FPX, credit card, or e-wallet. A digital certificate is issued immediately upon payment.

If you prefer to renew in person, Pos Malaysia branches process road tax renewals over the counter with the disc issued on the spot. JPJ counters are also available for cases involving outstanding summonses or vehicle record complications. Bring your MyKad, vehicle registration card (geran kereta), and your insurance certificate.

Selling or buying a car? Road tax status matters

If you are looking to sell your car in Malaysia, having valid road tax and no outstanding summonses makes your vehicle more attractive to buyers and removes friction from the transaction. When looking to buy a car in Malaysia, always check the road tax status, insurance status, and any JPJ summonses tied to the registration number before completing the purchase. Summonses follow the vehicle, not the previous owner,  so you could inherit unpaid fines if you skip this step.

Motorist Malaysia's platform gives both buyers and sellers the tools to conduct informed transactions, with vehicle history information available to verify the status of any car before money changes hands.

Frequently asked questions

1.Is there a penalty surcharge for renewing road tax late?

No. The road tax fee you pay upon renewal is the same standard amount regardless of how long your road tax has been expired. The consequence is the legal and insurance risk during the expired period, not an additional fee on renewal. Any JPJ summonses issued during the expired period do carry their own fines, which must be settled before renewal.

2. Can I check if my road tax has expired online?

Yes. You can check your road tax status through the MyJPJ app, the Myeg portal, or by visiting any JPJ counter. The MyJPJ app is the quickest, simply enter your vehicle registration number and it pulls the current status directly from JPJ's database.

3.What documents do I need to renew road tax?

You need your MyKad, your vehicle registration card (geran kereta), and a valid motor insurance certificate or cover note. If there are outstanding summonses, settle those first through MyBayar Saman or the Myeg portal before attempting renewal.
