JPJ digital road tax and e-LMM guide: How to show proof at roadblocks

Malaysia’s road tax and driving licence system is increasingly digital, but many motorists still wonder what they are expected to show when stopped at a JPJ or police roadblock. The key point is straightforward: if your road tax and driving licence are valid, enforcement officers can verify their status digitally even if you cannot open MyJPJ at that moment. The Ministry of Transport states that MyJPJ is an option rather than a compulsory requirement for motorists. 

The e-LKM is the digital version of the Lesen Kenderaan Motor, commonly known as road tax, while the e-LMM is the digital version of the Lesen Memandu Malaysia. JPJ introduced digital displays for eligible motorists from February 2023, allowing these records to be accessed through MyJPJ and JPJ digital services.

What is e-LKM?

The e-LKM is the digital record of a vehicle’s valid road tax. For eligible private vehicles owned by Malaysian citizens, JPJ states that the physical road tax disc does not need to be printed, displayed or attached to the windscreen when the digital option is used. The digitalisation of e-LKM for this category began nationwide on 10 February 2023.

Going digital does not remove the obligation to renew road tax. Motorists must still ensure that their LKM remains valid before using the vehicle on public roads. The digital system changes how the document can be displayed, not the requirement to maintain a valid road tax. 

What is e-LMM?

The e-LMM is the digital form of the Malaysian driving licence. According to JPJ, the digital licence can display information such as the holder’s name, identity card number, address, licence type and class, validity information, photograph, licence serial number and QR code.

JPJ’s digital display covers several licence categories, including learner, probationary, competent and vocational licences. The important requirement for motorists is that their driving licence remains valid and appropriate for the vehicle they are driving.

Motorists who prefer a physical driving licence also have that option. From 23 January 2026, Malaysians can request a physical LMM card at JPJ and UTC counters without providing proof of overseas travel. The Ministry of Transport states that the printing fee is RM20 for Malaysian citizens and RM100 for non-citizens.

How do you show e-LKM and e-LMM at a roadblock?

If an enforcement officer requests your driving licence or road tax details, you can open MyJPJ and access the relevant digital information through your profile. The e-LMM displays your driving licence information, while the e-LKM provides the vehicle’s road tax details. MyJPJ officially supports digital displays for both documents. 

However, MyJPJ itself is not compulsory. The Ministry of Transport states that motorists should not be summoned simply because they cannot display digital road tax through the app. Enforcement officers can verify road tax and driving licence status through their enforcement systems.

This means a flat phone battery, weak internet connection or temporary MyJPJ problem does not automatically make your documents invalid. What matters is whether the official records show that your road tax and driving licence are still valid. Keeping MyJPJ updated and ensuring that you can access your account can nevertheless make a roadside check more convenient.

What if you are driving someone else’s car?

JPJ provides a Kongsi LKM function for people who drive vehicles registered to another person. The registered owner can share a valid e-LKM with a family member or another driver through MyJPJ and specify how long the sharing period should remain active. 

The Ministry of Transport has also stated that a digital road tax copy can be printed and kept in the vehicle if needed. However, being unable to produce that printed copy does not by itself mean an offence has occurred, as enforcement personnel can verify the vehicle’s records electronically. 

What should motorists check before travelling?

Digital documents make verification more convenient, but drivers remain responsible for keeping their road tax, driving licence and required vehicle insurance valid. Before travelling, motorists should check the expiry dates of their documents and complete any necessary renewal before driving.

4. Can another person access my car’s e-LKM?
Yes. The registered owner can use the Kongsi LKM function in MyJPJ to share a valid e-LKM with another person for a selected period.
