Are there any ways for me to detect, in advance, any signs or symptoms of an imminent car breakdown (eg. starter failure, broken timing belt, etc...), so that I'm at least aware and prepared if I ended up getting stuck in the middle of the road?

Go for a full car inspection or get an OBD-II scanner (Onboard Diagnostic II)!
