Government Welcomes Private Sector To Revive KL-SG HSR Project, Says PM Anwar

The Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail (HSR) project, previously cancelled due to financial constraints, could be resurrected through private sector participation, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar, who is also the finance minister, stated that the government is now welcoming private sectors to fund the KL-SG HSR project. This is due to the overall lack of budget and the prioritization of essential infrastructure and public service projects. 

“We have to put the issues of poverty alleviation, flood mitigation, basic infrastructure, education and public health as our priority, at least for the next one or two years,” he stated.

“As such, the main project may need to be deferred to allow us to settle some outstanding matters, but we are still waiting for promising contributions from the private sector to proceed when necessary,” Anwar said in a joint press conference with the prime minister of Singapore, Lawrence Wong.



From Singapore’s side, Wong states that the city-state is prepared for discussions about the matter while waiting for proposals to come from Malaysia. 

“As far as the HSR is concerned, it’s unfortunate that we could not proceed with it originally. However, we are open to reviewing new proposals from Malaysia. From our perspective, greater connectivity between our two countries is always a plus,” Wong said.

For a refresher, the KL-SG HSR project was originally proposed in 2013, where it was then later postponed and ultimately cancelled in 2021 due to lack of funding. The project would’ve concluded this year and started operations in 2026.
