Ahmad Maslan confirms Genting road charge is NOT a toll, cites private land rights
The potential introduction of a road charge for travelers heading up to Genting Highlands has sparked significant debate among Malaysian drivers.
Recently, Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan stepped in to clarify the confusion, distinguishing the proposed fee from a standard highway toll.
According to the Deputy Minister, the charge proposed by Genting Malaysia Berhad cannot be classified as a toll because the road in question sits on private land.
A Private Charge, Not a Public Toll
Addressing the media, Ahmad Maslan explained that the government, specifically the Works Ministry and the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), does not have jurisdiction to regulate the charge in the same way they regulate tolls on highways like PLUS or LDP.
"It is not a toll. The road belongs to them (Genting). They are responsible for the maintenance, the slopes, and the road quality," Ahmad Maslan stated.
Because the road is privately owned and maintained, the company has the legal right to impose a fee for its usage without federal intervention, provided they comply with local authority regulations. This distinction is crucial for motorists to understand: you are paying for access to private property, not a public infrastructure levy.
Implications for Motorists
While this clarification settles the legal definition, it does mean that trips to the popular highland resort may soon become slightly more expensive. If implemented, this charge will be collected at Lingkaran Genting, impacting anyone driving up for a holiday or a weekend drive.
With the cost of driving potentially increasing, it is more important than ever to ensure your vehicle and driving expenses are managed efficiently.
