RM50 of petrol: How far can you drive in Malaysia now?

For many Malaysian drivers, RM50 remains a familiar amount to spend at the petrol station. However, the distance it can cover depends on the petrol price, the vehicle’s fuel consumption and everyday road conditions. Based on prices effective from 30 July to 5 August 2026, eligible BUDI95 users pay RM1.99 per litre for subsidised RON95. Unsubsidised RON95 is priced at RM3.82 per litre, while RON97 costs RM4.40 per litre. The Ministry of Finance has also confirmed that the BUDI95 monthly limit remains at 200 litres for eligible users. 

How much petrol does RM50 buy?

At RM1.99 per litre, RM50 buys approximately 25.13 litres of subsidised RON95. At the unsubsidised RON95 price of RM3.82 per litre, RM50 buys about 13.09 litres. For RON97, the same amount buys around 11.36 litres.

The difference matters because driving range begins with the number of litres purchased. An eligible BUDI95 user receives almost twice as much petrol for RM50 as someone paying the current unsubsidised RON95 price.

How far can RM50 of subsidised RON95 take you?

A useful estimate can be calculated from the car’s fuel consumption in litres per 100 kilometres. Divide the litres purchased by the vehicle’s fuel consumption, then multiply the result by 100.

A fuel-efficient car averaging 6 litres per 100 kilometres could theoretically travel about 419 kilometres on RM50 of subsidised RON95. A vehicle using 9 litres per 100 kilometres could cover about 279 kilometres.

This means RM50 of BUDI95 petrol may take many petrol cars roughly 280 to 420 kilometres. A small hatchback driven steadily on a highway may sit near the upper end. A larger sport utility vehicle used in congested city traffic may be closer to the lower end.

How far can RM50 of unsubsidised petrol take you?

At RM3.82 per litre, RM50 buys 13.09 litres of unsubsidised RON95. A car averaging 6 litres per 100 kilometres could travel around 218 kilometres. At 9 litres per 100 kilometres, the estimated distance falls to about 145 kilometres.

For RON97 at RM4.40 per litre, RM50 buys about 11.36 litres. That could provide approximately 189 kilometres in a car using 6 litres per 100 kilometres, or around 126 kilometres in a car using 9 litres per 100 kilometres.

Using RON97 does not automatically make every vehicle travel farther. Drivers should use the fuel grade recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Paying more for higher-octane petrol does not guarantee enough additional fuel efficiency to recover the price difference.

Why your actual distance may be lower

These figures are estimates rather than guaranteed ranges. Stop-and-go traffic requires repeated acceleration, while idling consumes petrol without adding any distance.

High speeds, aggressive acceleration, heavy loads and underinflated tyres can also increase fuel consumption. Vehicle condition matters too, as worn spark plugs, unsuitable engine oil, poor wheel alignment or neglected maintenance may reduce efficiency.

Fuel economy can vary depending on driving behaviour, vehicle condition and the driving environment. Aggressive acceleration, excessive idling and incorrect tyre pressure can increase petrol consumption and reduce the distance a vehicle can travel.

A steady highway journey may therefore produce a longer range than a trip through central Kuala Lumpur during peak-hour congestion. However, very high highway speeds, steep roads, strong winds and heavy rain can still increase petrol consumption.

How to calculate your own RM50 petrol range

The most reliable estimate comes from your car’s actual fuel-consumption record. Reset the trip meter after refuelling, drive normally and compare the distance travelled with the number of litres used.

Repeating this process across several refills will provide a more useful average than relying on a single journey. Once you know your average consumption, divide the litres purchased with RM50 by the consumption figure and multiply the result by 100.

This method reflects your usual routes, traffic patterns, vehicle condition and driving habits more accurately than relying only on a manufacturer’s laboratory figure.

Is RM50 enough for daily commuting?

For an eligible BUDI95 user driving an efficient car, RM50 could cover several days of commuting. A driver travelling 40 kilometres per day may obtain around seven to ten days of use from an estimated range of 280 to 420 kilometres.

The result will be lower for drivers paying unsubsidised prices, driving larger vehicles or spending long periods in congestion. As unsubsidised fuel prices may change weekly, motorists should check the latest official rate before calculating travel costs or planning a long-distance journey.
