Hyundai USA launched a home charging system last month in the United States. Could this be a reality one day here in Malaysia?

The home charging eco-system named Hyundai Home will allow Hyundai EV owners to charge their vehicles right at home by upgrading their home's electric panel so that it can handle charging a vehicle.

The initiative was carried out in partnership with Electrum, an online platform that helps users seek out home solar, battery storage, and electrification solutions. Hyundai Home will incorporate solar panels and energy storage in its EV charging system and Electrum will play a big part in helping Hyundai's customers seek out the best power solutions for them.

Hyundai aims to 'democratise EV charging' and believes that this ecosystem will allow its customers to lower their energy bills while providing greater convenience. The Korean manufacturer also hopes that this initiative would woo more people to adopt EV, inline with the current trend of eco-friendly solutions in the automotive industry.

The convenience of being able to charge your Ioniq 5 or Kona from the comfort of your home can't be understated, however, it does come at a steep cost. The electrical panel upgrade is said to cost anywhere from USD$1,300 to USD$3,000 and customers living in multifamily buildings would also not be able to adopt this system.

Realistically speaking, the infrastructure here in Malaysia might not be quite ready just yet for such home-charging ecosystems. It would certainly be an interesting prospect if that does become a reality one day though! Let us know what you think in the comment section below!
