Car fires are not to be taken lightly. If not handled properly, it could endanger the lives of your passengers, as well as bystanders nearby.

The most common causes of car fires are overheated engines or fuel system leaks. If you ever find yourself in this situation, it’s important that you act quickly to prevent injuries and further damages.

Follow these steps in the event of a car fire:

1) Pull Over to the Side of the Road

If you see black smoke or smell something burning, immediately signal your intention and pull over to the side of the road.

2) Turn Off Your Engine

This next step is important as it stops the flow of fuel to your engine. A full-blown fire or explosion could occur if your engine isn’t switched off.

3) Exit the Vehicle and Get a Safe Distance Away

Quickly exit the vehicle and move to safe distance away from your vehicle. Refrain from grabbing personal belongings because fires can be unpredictable and might spread quickly.

4) Call the Fire Brigade (999) for Assistance

Quickly call the fire brigade or police for assistance once you’re at a safe location. They will have the necessary equipment to fight the fire if it gets out of control.

(Optional) 5. Try to Put Out the Fire with a Fire Extinguisher

If the fire hasn’t spread and is still manageable, you could try to put it out yourself, provided you have a fire extinguisher ready.

However, if the fire is coming from your fuel tank, do not attempt to put it out. Instead, you should get to a safe distance as quickly as possible. A burning fuel tank could explode without notice.

When facing a car fire, it’s vital to remain calm and collected. Personal safety is most important—remember, cars and personal belongings can be replaced, but lives can’t.

We hope these tips have been useful. Remember to drive carefully and to stay safe on the roads!
