Following a new regulation, motorists now can tint their rear windshields and passenger windows as dark as they want to their liking.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said these changes were a response to demands from motorists who want darker windows to block the sun and heat from their car interiors.

These new changes are keeping in place with the United Nations Regulations on safety glazing materials installation on vehicles (UN Regulation No. 43). But front windshields, driver and front passenger side windows are still required to remain transparent. For safety reasons, these windows must allow 70% and 50% light in respectively.

Minister Low said, “we will not compromise on regulations for tinting windows at the front of the vehicle.”

Previously, rear car windows had to maintain at least 30% visibility. Those who want to tint all their windows fully for security and health reasons must seek permission for the authorities.

Minister Low added that those who want to do it for security reasons would be charged a RM50 service fee for every application. Should their application be approved, they would be charged RM5,000 for a permit to fully tint all their car windows.

He went on to say that, “Each approval will last for two years, and they need to reapply each time,” and said that the approval would be determined by a special committee that will meet on a monthly basis, lead by Road Transport Department (RTD) director-general Datuk Seri Shaharuddin Khalid.

The committee will vet each application and do cross checks with the police. That way, they can confirm if applicants have a clean record and no unpaid summonses. However, those applying to have fully tinted windows for health reasons are exempt from charges.

The new regulations will come into effect on Wednesday (May 8), and it will only apply to private vehicles, including those used for e-hailing services.

RTD enforcement officers will begin their checks on vehicles under the new regulations in three months.
