GEORGE TOWN, 6 AUG 2025 – A car caught fire on the Penang Bridge today, causing a traffic jam that stretched over 10 kilometres during the busy morning rush hour. The incident happened at around 7.30 AM, involving a compact car heading towards the island from the mainland. Authorities said the driver escaped unharmed, but the vehicle was completely destroyed in the fire.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, but early reports suggest an engine fault. The Fire and Rescue Department arrived within 10 minutes and managed to put out the flames quickly. However, by that time, traffic had already built up, with thousands of commuters stuck in gridlock. The situation was worsened by rubbernecking on the opposite lane, causing delays in both directions. For those planning to cross, always check the latest Traffic Camera updates before starting your journey.

Traffic only began to ease at around 10.15 AM after authorities cleared the burnt vehicle and ensured the bridge was safe for travel. Drivers stuck on the bridge reported delays of over two hours. Those using the route are reminded to ensure their vehicles are in top condition to avoid such incidents.
