Targeted RON95 petrol subsidy rollout delayed for further review
The Malaysian government has decided to delay the implementation of the targeted RON95 petrol subsidy mechanism. This move comes after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that the current review process must ensure the new subsidy plan will not burden the public.
The delay is aimed at refining the mechanism to avoid any negative impact on the cost of living, especially for the B40 and M40 groups. With the high dependency on fuel for daily transportation, any misstep could lead to rising prices in essential goods and services.
Anwar emphasised that while the government is committed to subsidy rationalisation, the approach must be balanced. “We will not rush this policy. We want to avoid causing hardship to the people,” he said.
The original plan was to introduce a more focused subsidy using data from PADU and BUDI Madani to ensure only eligible Malaysians benefit from the lower RON95 price. However, feedback from stakeholders and ongoing technical evaluations have shown the need for further refinements.
